Kerala Piravi: The History of Formation of Kerala.

Kerala Day also referred to as Kerala Piravi, marks the birth of the state of Kerala in southern India. The state of Kerala was created on 1 November 1956, long after the Independence of India. The Kerala we see today is made up of the princely states of Trivandrum, Kochi, British Malabar and Kasaragod. The state of Kerala came into being after the Indian government's decision to reorganize the states on the basis of language.

In the first phase, the aim was to unite the Malayalis based on language, history and legend. The Kerala Region Committee was formed in 1921 to include the regions of Kochi, Travancore and Malabar with the aim of forming the state of Kerala.

The Kerala we see today is the result of many years of discussions and conferences even during the British rule. In 1928, the princely Praja Sammelan and Akhila Kerala Kudiyan Sammelan held in Ernakulam, united Kerala was discussed. A resolution was passed on the matter. In the same year, Jawaharlal Nehru came to Kerala and attended the Congress conference held at Payyannur. This meeting presented to Nehru the demand that Kerala should be declared a separate state at the stage of independence.

In the years to come, the cause of Kerala gained more popular support from all quarters. Strong support was received from Malabar. The All-Kerala Student Conference of 1937 gave firm support to the demand for a united Kerala. In the 1940s, there were movements that gave more strength to the demand for a united Kerala. In 1945, a joint meeting of KPCC, Kochi Rajya Prajamandal and Travancore State Congress formed the Committee for the Formation of United Kerala. As part of this, the United Kerala Convention was held in Thrissur in 1947.

After the country gained independence, a group led by Kelapaji came to Delhi and met Nehru. The demand was that the state of Kerala should come into existence immediately. Nehru listened to the complaints and demands. Later, the Justice SK Dar Commission, appointed by the Constituent Assembly, came to Kerala in 1948 to study the problems arising in the formation of a linguistic state. The DAR Commission's study report was in favor of the United Kerala Samithi.

On the recommendation of the Dar Commission, the princely states of Kochi and Travancore were merged and the State of Tiru-Cochin came into existence in July 1949. This was the first victory of the dream of united Kerala. Kerala State was formed on 1st November 1956 after many years of efforts. When Kerala was formed, Kerala was the smallest of the 14 states of India. At the time of formation there were only 5 districts in Kerala. The first general election in the state of Kerala was held on February 28, 1957. The government with EM Shankaran Namboothiripad as Chief Minister came to power through the elections.
