Celebration of Onam in Kerala

Onam, one of the most significant festivals in Kerala, is a vibrant celebration that spans ten days. Rooted in ancient mythology and cultural traditions, it is a time of joyous gatherings, colorful decorations, and sumptuous feasts. Let's delve into the rich tapestry of Onam festivities and explore the essence of this cherished occasion.

Onam is a festival celebrated in the southern part of India with a wide celebration that lasts 10 days. It is observed in Kerala in honor of the wise leadership displayed by the mythical demon king Mahabali. During these Onam days, people dress as King Mahabali and walk around the town, giving blessings to families. Even though Onam is a festival related to Hinduism, in Kerala, people celebrate together happily, no matter which caste or religion they belong to. During Onam days, people also arrange beautiful flower carpets in front of their houses. For me, Onam is all about the delicious Sadhya we have during this festive season. It includes a wide variety of dishes, almost 26 items, and my favorite would be the payasam. When it comes to Onam, it is the beautiful memories that stay until the next Onam. Wearing traditional attire, playing Onam games, enjoying the Sadhya, and creating flower carpets are some of the beautiful moments of Onam.

As Onam draws to a close, its spirit of unity, joy, and cultural richness lingers in the hearts of all who partake in its festivities. From the elaborate feasts to the vibrant decorations and traditional rituals, Onam is a time-honored celebration that brings people together, transcending barriers of caste and creed. As we bid farewell to another Onam, let us carry forward its message of harmony and togetherness, cherishing the memories and looking forward to the joyous reunions of the next year's festivities.
